Hand over the icecream and nobody gets hurt

Soda jerk passing ice cream soda between two soda fountains in 1936. (Wikipedia)

Another busy day, another moment stolen away to feed my brain.

OK, go on, say it… “No gloves!  He’s touching the icecream cone with his BARE HANDS! Run away, run away!”

Gimmee that cone already, I’ve spent many years building up my immunological responses.  RAR!

Dr. Quantum and Empathic Civilisation

Probability densities corresponding to the wavefunctions of an electron… oh never mind…

I needed to change gears for a few minutes today and stumbled across these two videos: “Dr Quantum – Double Slit Experiment” and “Empathic Civilisation.”  Both are topics I have a great interest in, if not as much depth as I’d like.  Perhaps if I took embraced a polyphasic sleep cycle I could stay awake 22 hours a day and have all the time in the world to embed myself in my Internet-fed, guilty pleasures…

Both are fascinating; one for its exploration of some of the smallest particles in existence and the other for its exploration of the large collections of particles we call people.  At the very least, my brain emerged refreshed and ready to tackle some more drudgery.

Manolo for the Men

the Afiyet

Just a quick Monday morning link.  Married father humor, found at “Manolo for the Men, authored by “Mr. Henry.”

And in case you know who Manolo Blahnik is… (don’t worry, I didn’t) there’s a fine-print disclaimer way, way down at the bottom of the page:

Disclaimer: Manolo the Shoeblogger is not Manolo Blahnik

(and it’s not about shoes at all)

DA TRANSLATIONS R HILARIOS

You smooth talker!

I STUMBLED UPON THES N3AT 3NGLISH-2-12-YAAR-OLD-AOLER TRANSLA2R WRITAN BY LUCAS LONGLAY!1!!!1! WTF TEH TRANSLATIONS R HILARIOS!!111 IT PROBABLEY WUDNT TAEK HIM MUCH 3FORT 2 UPDAET IT FOR ENGLISH-2-T3XT-M3SAEG TRANSLA2R OR TEXTNG-WHIEL-DRIVNG TRANSLA2R!1!!11! OR.!!11!!!!11!1111!!! OMG WUD THEYRE B ANY REAL DIF3RENCE??!!!!!!? OMG WTF HMM..!11!11!!111!!111!!1!1111

OK, so what I really said was this:

I stumbled upon this neat “English-to-12-Year-Old-AOLer” translator, written by Lucas Longley.  The translations are hilarious.  It probably wouldn’t take him much effort to update it for “English-to-text-message” translator, or “Texting-while-driving” translator.  Or… would there be any real difference?   Hmmm….

And… LOOK, there’s a translator for talking to your teenage girl!  Now that one is a bit more advanced and will translate in either direction.  Now that must have taken some real engineering.  (Go on, try it!)

OK, I’m really spending a lot more time on this than I thought I would.  Here’s the “Translation Party” which will take your phrase and translate to Japanese, then back to English, then back to Japanese, until “equilibrium is found.”

Then there’s “The Dialectizer” which will take your best Queen’s English and translate it to Redneck, Jive, Cockney, Elmer Fudd, Swedish Chef, Moron, Pig Latin or Hacker.  I think my favorite it Swedish Chef (Bork Bork Bork!)

Enough!  No more!  OK, just one more.  Translation Humor & Mocking Machine Translation.

Now begone!  I mean, “Noo… begune-a! (bork!)”  ARRR!   Gar, Where can I find a bottle o’rum!

Sun to Earth “I’m going to eat you!”

Here it comes!

One of my first posts is about solar activity and its predicted increase.

Sure enough, Nasa Space Weather delivers.  On August 2nd, they noticed a giant “coronal mass ejection.”  Yesterday, on August 3rd, they confirmed that Europe was experiencing the first hit, but thankfully with no more impact than beautiful aurorae.

Hurry, if you read this in time you may have a chance to look up at the aurorae before we’re vaporized!  (just kidding… but you don’t want to miss the aurorae that should be visible all the way “down” to the Northern US.)

When you think about it… won’t that be nice?  When the final, monstrous lick of fire from the sun hits us, before we fry we’ll all see Northern Lights.  Everywhere.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

I’m all atwitter

Just in case you hadn’t noticed the widget in the right-most column, I’ve finally joined the rest of the birding community and setup a Twitter account.  Follow me for a separate stream of posts… at first they’ll probably all be retweets and replies, but I hope to get into the hang of it and post an original thought or two from time to time.  And of course, let me know if you’re on Twitter so I can follow you.  Ta ta, cheerio and all that good stuff.
